In the immediate aftermath of August 4th, Minteshreen and partners launched Basecamp. Basecamp was conceived as an operations room to map out, organize and execute volunteer-driven relief efforts to move through the relief requirements.
August 4th 2020. 215 deaths, 7,500 injuries, 300,000 homeless and $15 Billion in Property Damage. In the immediate aftermath, the required humanitarian effort was colossal. There was a lot to be done between humanitarian relief, street cleanup and damage surveying. In the criminal absence of a national government response to the blast, citizens descended to areas affected by the explosion, armed with a desire to help out and try and save their city, in any way that they could.
Along with our partners Baytna Baytak, and Muwatin Lebnene, we formed Basecamp. Basecamp was conceived as an operations room to map out, organize and execute a volunteer-driven relief effort to move through the relief requirements. From Basecamp, we organized a mapping and data collection department, food donation, hygiene items donation, medical and psychological aid, home rehabilitation, and waste collection and management. At Basecamp, we designed the operation to allow all partners to bring in their expertise, while keeping a low barrier of entry for volunteers to help, building a real community driven response.
473 homes rehabilitated
1,100+ medically treated
1,550 Hygiene parcels donated
2,550 food parcels donated
90+ tons of waste collected and recycled
