Minteshreen took a proactive role in the 2020 student body elections with allies and partners to form an independent list of candidates that reflect the values and principles of the October 17 revolution to run against the establishment political parties.
Since 2005, establishment political parties took hostage the student councils in universities, transforming academic institutions into a microcosm of Lebanese society by embedding corruption, clientelism and sectarianism in every day student life. These councils have repeatedly failed to tackle critical issues that student face today such as tuition increase, freedom of expression and inclusivity amongst others.
We took a proactive role in the 2020 elections and set up a task force with allies and partners to form an independent list of candidates that reflect the values and principles of the October 17 revolution to run against the establishment political parties.
Minteshreen worked on multiple fronts with independent lists and secular clubs during the elections of several universities (Lebanese American University, The American University of Beirut, University St. Joseph, Rafic Hariri University), such as supporting and managing electoral campaigns, offering strategic backing and joint election planning
The election rounds resulted in a historic landslide victory for independent groups and secular clubs across all universities, which claimed an overwhelming majority of the seats, taking back the student representative council from the establishment political parties.
