In the wake of an economic crisis and the Eurobond payment gridlock, Minteshreen organized a panel discussion with renowned specialists diagnosed & discussed the declining health of the Lebanese Economy at the Beirut “Egg” to better understand how we got here and determine what measures need to be highlighted to mobilize ground action.
March 9 2020 was the deadline for the Lebanese government to pay a $1.2 billion Eurobond debt or default. The climate at the time was exclusively focusing on the payment, without a fully developed strategy that covered important components like depositor protection, the lifting of subsidies, and an economic recovery. The government, in collusion with the banks, were taking a decision that impacted the entire population without a concrete vision.
We organized an event titled “A Roadmap to get us out of the economic crisis” in the legendary Egg building in Downtown Beirut. The objective of the event was to offer a simple and understandable explanation to the complex economic crisis, to have a healthy & clear discussion on whether the Eurobonds should be paid or not, what are the duties of the government and banks towards the people and the IMF, and how to best mobilize the ground when it comes to the economy. We held a panel discussion with financial and economic experts from across the political spectrum.
We welcomed 500 people to the event.
The government decided to default on the Eurobond payment, but to this day, The establishment still has no official concrete plan, no vision and no will to get us out of this mess. Instead they have opted to burden its citizens with the losses.
