The right to vote is one of the most important political and human rights that a citizen can have. However, Lebanese laws do not allow young people aged between 18 and 21 to express their political opinion in the elections. The October 17 revolution was the turning point which prove that the Lebanese youngsters are able to be a clear model of political awareness through political discourse and practice.
Therefore, the Student and Youth Committee in Minteshreen took the lead in launching a wide campaign aimed at reducing the voting age to 18 years after a lengthy research on the constitution, laws and the mechanism of lowering the voting age, especially that the civil laws that citizens enjoy at the age of 18 completely contradict with Article 21 of the Lebanese Constitution stipulates the adoption of the age of 21 for voting, while sharing the alternative!
To date, 610 persons have signed the petition launched by the Vote18 Campaign, endorsing this reform and their belief in the youth, and their power to induce change.
Follow up steps to the campaign will include talks, webinars, roundtables to help share this awareness first among the youth, and motivate them to own this fight and gain confidence in the role they can play in the future of our country.
